WORKSHOP # 51:
THE INNOVATION WORKFORCE OF THE FUTURE
January 14, 15, and 16, San Diego, CA
Workshop #51 will look at the strategic implications of the workforce of the future – how the workforce is changing and how our orporations can maintain and build innovation competencies in this changing world. The workshop will develop an understanding of the emerging workforce so that our member companies can prepare to recruit and manage younger workers, attract and retain a globally diverse workforce, and leverage the value of their existing workforce.
Tom Friedman’s “perfect storm” of digitization, globalization, and the internet has changed the world of business, and our companies need to learn how to capitalize on the opportunities and defend against the challenges of this new, flat world. Barriers to commerce and communication are coming down as the internet becomes the repository, the exchange medium, and often the impetus for building knowledge. Cultural diversity is changing – more than any time before, the most significant differences may be generational as the younger generation spends more and more of its time on the world wide web and communicates across nationality, culture, and gender in the open spaces of My Space, Second Life, and Club Penguin. Their work practices often confound older managers as they practice what one of our Steering Committee members calls “innate collaboration.”
These changes challenge us in the IAPD to look beyond the processes and practices that have fueled innovation and product development for the past two decades – not to forget them, but to explore how these global changes are demanding new and differentcompetencies. Workshop 51 will investigate the ways in which innovators are attracting a younger and global workforce, as well as the practices and technologies that enable them to mentor, manage, and retain this workforce. It will illuminate the cultural, technological, and business changes that are making the most difference and reveal strategies for finding and building the skills and competencies that will be needed to innovate in the future.
Issues the workshop will address include:
⇒ Designing the workplace of the future, including workspaces and technologies;
⇒ Developing the global workforce and the local workforce;
⇒ Developing the particular skills needed for innovation in the future.
Those who are engaged in product develop and innovation will find this workshop valuable as they consider what they must do to attract and integrate the new workforce. What changes, for example, should be made to workplace design, to the composition and management of cross-functional teams, and to the management of new product projects? HR professionals and C-level executives will learn how others are building workforce capacity and designing their workforce strategy to meet their innovation goals.
